The five pairs of birds symbolise the five cardinal relationships of traditional Chinese society:
A pair of phoenixes symbolises the relationships between the emperor and empress with the people.
The mandarin ducks represent the marriage relationship.
The two birds on the ground are supposed to be wagtails symbolising the fraternal relationship.
The pair of orioles on a branch symbolise friendship.
The cranes, the patriarch of birds, represent the father-son relationship.
