Unequal couples

Pair of beechwood panels, one plank, not reinforced
One is monogrammed "HB" (linked) at upper left. Numbered "662 J" on the back of the panels

These two pendants are moral images featuring unequal couples depicting the theme of "venal love". On one, an older woman desires a handsome young man while putting money in his bag, on the other a young woman, coveted by an older man, helps herself to his purse on his belt. It is rare to find these paintings as a pair.

Special thanks to Professor Koepplin for his assistance in describing these two paintings in an e-mail dated 7 December 2021. He compares them to two works by Wolfgang Krodel the Elder (Schneeberg 1500 - 1561), a student of Cranach: one (panel, 38 x 23 cm) from the Christie's London sale, Christie's, 11 March 1993, n° 105, and the other (panel, 53 x 37,5 cm dated 1528) from the sale in Vienna, Dorotheum, 23 October 2018, n° 10 (sold for 37,500€).
