VOC plate

VOC plate
CHINA, INDIA COMPANY - YONGZHENG ERA (1723-1735)
Famille Rose polychrome enamelled porcelain depicting two lions around the coat-of-arms of the Dutch Republic, with a lion brandishing a sabre on a yellow ground over the initials VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie), on the wing is the motto "Concordia Res Parvae Crescunt 1728". The rim is adorned with a pink frieze.

This decor imitates that of a silver ducat struck for the VOC at the Hoorn of West Friesland mint in 1728. The minting of these coins was of historical importance, as prior to 1726, no coins had been minted specifically for circulation in the Indies. In 1726, the VOC illegally ordered silver ducats which were melted down once the fraud was discovered. In 1728, the VOC obtained permission to mint these ducats. The décor of this porcelain comes from the reverse side of these ducats.
