G. DE WIT FOR H. FAUTREZ

G. De Wit for H. Fautrez
"Phoebe" tapestry

Hand-woven tapestry, after Hugues Fautrez (Antwerp, 1935-), PHOEBEA, Gaspard de Wit manufacturer (1892-1971), signature and brand woven into the weft. Hugues Fautrez was a Belgian artistic weaver who participated in the second tapestry biennial exhibit in Lausanne in 1965. Pierre Pauli (1916-1970) and Jean Lurçat founded the international tapestry biennial of Lausanne [Biennale internationale de la tapisserie de Lausanne] (1962-1995). In 1962, at the first biennial, the works were figurative with the cardboard drawings made by the likes of Matisse and Le Corbusier, in order to be interpreted by studios. During the second biennial, the works were often more abstract. More relief was used, and artists interpreting their own work were highlighted. Improvisation without the use of patterns became commonplace. A testament to these biennials has been preserved for posterity in the collection of the Toms Pauli foundation in Lausanne. The expert for this lot is Mr. Aymeric de Villelume.
