Mathieu van Beveren's refined work can be recognized in these two beautiful angels, likely from major confessionals: the characters' elegant stance, long faces with retained expressions and curly hair. Van Beveren was born in Antwerp and trained by Pierre Verbruggen the Elder ca. 1645. He worked with stone, wood, terra cotta and ivory. He participated in creating the rood screen sculptures for Notre-Dame de Termonde church between 1659-1666 under the direction of Quellin the Elder. The caryatids on the churchwardens' bench at this same church are also attributed to him, and said to have been done in collaboration with Quellin the Younger. Van Beveren seems to have sought a more classical style in his compositions. With his knowledge, he trained many students, including Jan Baptist Santvoort, Anthoni de Winter, Jan Baptist Doms, Peeter Libot and Petrus Bouttats. Many of his works are conserved in private collections or at the Royal Museums of art and history in Brussels, such as an ivory pietà (inv. 1754).
