Cartier Londres
18 kt yellow gold depicting a green woodpecker holding a black Australian Matrix opal in its claw, measuring +/- 35 x 17 mm. The bird's head is set with a facetted oval aquamarine, a small calibrated emerald (+/- 3 mm) and 8 small brilliants. The tail is set with 4 calibrated emeralds. 1960-70s work. In a Cartier case. Hallmark: none. Signed: Cartier London. Provenance: gift from Princess Lilian of Belgium, sister-in-law to Jacques Cartier.
The woodpecker's head was originally set with a ruby, which was replaced by the aquamarine. The ruby was set in a ring, which is included with the lot in order to return the brooch to its original state. The ring is 18 kt yellow gold, set with a Burmese ruby cabochon measuring +/- 9 x 7 x 4.3 mm, flanked by a cross-shaped pavé setting of small diamonds. Contemporary work. Hallmark: 750. TD: 57.
