HANS MEMLING (1430-1494) (His circle)

Flemish school, first half of the 16th century
The presentation of Mary at the Temple, Oil on panel, first half of the 16th century.

An antique tag on the back reads: "This painting was painted by Memling in 1478 for his sister, a nun at the Saint Esprit convent in Bruges, where it was conserved until their eradication, and hidden by a religious woman who later sold it".

The existence of the Saint Esprit convent or cloister in Bruges was first mentioned in 1236. It was located on Saint-Esprit street (now Goezeputstraat). After 1380, it was occupied by the nuns of the third order of Saint Francis.

The convent was closed in 1796 by the revolutionary authorities.

The work was analysed extensively by Iparc in 2019, with the following conclusion: "With this information along with the iconography and the art historical findings we can conclude that this painting most likely dates from the first half of the 16th century."
A copy of IPARC's report from September of 2019 will be made available to the buyer.
