Assiettes à palmes, 1776
Porcelain plates decorated with flowers and fruits in the centre, and three flower bouquets in reserves on the rim. Marked with two interlaced 'L's, letter-date Y for 1776, and the marks of painters Guillaume Noël and Jean Baptiste Tandart the elder.
Provenance: Large Austrian collection.
These plates almost certainly are part of the green flowers and fruits service delivered to Mr. de Vergennes, the minister of foreign affairs, on April 30, 1777, and gifted by Louis XVI to Emperor Joseph II, the brother of Marie-Antoinette. Fifty-three pieces of this service are conserved in Vienna at the Hofburg palace.
