After Antoine Van Dyck (1599-1641)
Portrait of Isabella Clara Eugenia
Oil on canvas. Daughter of King Philip II of Spain, Isabella Clara Eugenia became regent of the southern provinces of the Netherlands in 1598. After the death of her husband, Archduke Albert VII of Habsburg in 1621, she stopped wearing jewellery and provocative clothing, and instead wore the religious habit of the order of Franciscans of Saint-Claire until her death in 1633. The portrait of Isabella in religious clothing by Van Dyck is in keeping with the tradition of her ancestors: Margaret of Austria, Mary of Hungary, and Margaret of Parma. the first portrait of Isabella in religious clothing was painted by Peter Paul Rubens in 1625. Not framed. Chips and restorations.
