Attributed to Matthias Schoevaerdts (around 1663-1703)
Market scene; Oil on reinforced panel. With a certificate from Dr. Walter Bernt dated July 1977. A painter of lively genre landscapes, Mathys Schoevaerdts was born around 1665, most likely in Brussels as he was declared one of the Brussels bourgeois when admitted as a Guild master in 1690. While he remains true to the spirit of village scenes like Jan Breughel the Elder, Schoevaerdts brisk touch and choice of colours situate him definitively around the turn of the century. His pictorial technique distinguishes him from his predecessors with its lightness and the softness of the tones used. In a wooden frame. Flaws: two small scratches in the centre.
Old private collection, Munich. Then private collection, Brussels.
