Eugène-Paul Dieudonne (1825-?), after the original by Franz-Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873)

Portrait of Emperor Napoleon III; Oil on canvas, inscribed 'Dieudonne' on the back. Stamp on the back of the old canvas reads "Au spectre solaire, 18 quai de l'école, Colcomb-Bourgeois". Charles Bourgeois managed the "Au spectre Solaire" colour factory. This address was well-known to many painters such as Ingres, Ary-Scheffer, Granet, Delacroix and Winterhalter. Eugène-Paul Dieudonné, born in 1825, was a student of Henri Delaborde, and exhibited at the Salons of 1848 to 1880, primarily portraits and studies. He was one of the official copyists of imperial portraits carried out by Winterhalter. His painted copies were offered to diplomats and public figures and hung in government buildings and offices. In a moulded giltwood frame. Damage and restorations.
