Charge of the Uhlans Watercolour representing the charge of the Uhlans on a French village during the war of 1870. The work is monogrammed E.S.T., dated 1873, and bears the artist's stamp. Elizabeth Southerden Thompson met the painters Meissonnier and Detaille in Paris in 1870, who sparked her interest in military painting. She married General Butler, hence the nickname 'Lady Butler'.
