Albert Raty (1889-1970)
Village of Frahan
Oil on unalite panel, signed 'Alb. Raty' at lower left and bearing a 1989-1990 'Générale de Banque à Namur' exposition sticker on the back. Deaf and mute from birth, Albert Raty was enrolled in the Woluwe-Saint-Lambert institute for the deaf and mute from 1894 to 1905, where he began taking drawing lessons. He then frequented Blanc-Garin's workshop from 1906 to 1912, and L. Simon's at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris from 1912 to 1917. He participated in numerous expositions from 1912 to 1969 in Belgium and abroad, particularly in France, and the International Salons for Silent Artists (Brussels, 1930, and New York, 1934). His large body of work is characterised by broad strokes and thick layers and a simplification of volumes.
