Marcelle Ackein (1882-1952)

Study for "Mopti l'arrivée des tapis" ["Mopti, the arrival of the rugs"]
Oil on canvas signed 'Ackein' at lower left. Inscribed 'Mopti l'arrivée des tapis (étude)' on the back. Marcelle Ackein was born in Algiers on 26 November 1882 and died in 1952. She was a French orientalist painter. She spent her childhood in Algeria before enrolling at the Beaux-arts in Paris. Having received a scholarship, she travelled to Morocco and other parts of Africa where she found inspiration. Among her works and creations is the decoration of the Our Lady of Victories Cathedral in Dakar.
