Note: This trinket dish with its mythological decoration fits perfectly within the Symbolist movement that was in vogue in Brussels at the very end of the 19th century. Fernand Dubois took part in exhibitions organised by the Groupe des XX and later by the Cercle de la Libre Esthétique; here we can see a nod to the famous ‘Mysterious Sphinx’ by Charles Van der Stappen, of whom Dubois was a pupil, as well as the influence of his fellow artist Fernand Khnopff, in whose work the theme of the winged woman was explored on several occasions.
