This watch was most likely presented to Flory Van Donck following his victory in the cup at the Royal Waterloo Golf Club on 18 December 1951. The tournament was then known as ‘The Lion of Waterloo’, in reference to the historic monument erected on the battlefield of Waterloo, one of Belgium’s most famous. The monument marks the spot where the Prince of Orange (future King of the Netherlands) was wounded during the battle between Emperor Napoleon I and the allied armies led by the Duke of Wellington. The lion symbolises the restoration of peace in Europe.
