Grand-cross set, comprising the cross, by Buls, in gold and enamel, 110 x 70 mm, single-sided with civil title, owl hallmark and B hallmark on the ring, reverse LLRR monogram with its sash and the breast star, in silver, gold and enamel, reverse: C.J. BULS label, swan hallmark on the pin. Weight of the cross without the ribbon: 71.2 g.
The Breast star is accompanied by a handwritten label indicating that it comes from a Drouot sale on 11 October 1954, lot no. 1, and is accompanied by the Grand Cordon; on the reverse of the label is a handwritten inscription: " Plaque de grand croix de Leopold (Belgique) ayant appartenu au Cte Waleski, fils naturel de Napoléon 1er, ministre des affaires étrangères de Nap. III.... "
It was awarded to Count Alexandre Walewski in 1854. Born in 1810 from the relationship between Napoleon I and Marie Walewska, wife of Count Anastazy Walewski. During the Second Republic, he was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary to Florence in 1849, Ambassador to Naples in 1850, then to Madrid and London in 1851. Under the Second Empire, Napoleon III appointed him Minister for Foreign Affairs in 1855.
