Order of the Red Eagle
First Class Lot, long-winged type (1855–1918), comprising the sash and its pendant, 58mm, 31.67g, ‘FR’ engraved on the edge of one of the arms of the cross; Breast star, in silver and enamel, 90mm, 77.4g, ‘W’ engraved beneath the pin ring on the reverse. (Barac 280 and 293; OEK 1637 and 1638; Werlich p.184).
The Order of the Red Eagle (Roter Adlerorden in German) was founded by George I William of Brandenburg-Bayreuth in 1705. Following the annexation of the provinces of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and Brandenburg-Ansbach by the Kingdom of Prussia in January 1792, King Frederick William II of Prussia transformed the order into a Prussian royal order on 12 June 1792.
In a red leather and gilt case showing some wear, slight scratches on the medal, knockss in the inscription on the breast star, generally extremely fine. (2)
