ITALY, PAPAL STATES
Adrian VI (1522–1523)
Papal bull, lead, 47.24g, 37mm, haloed heads of St Paul and St Peter in three-quarter profile, in the centre a cross surmounting a coat of arms, SS PP, reverse: ADRI ANVS . PP. VI., cross above (Serafini 77).
Adrian VI (Adriaan Floriszoon Boeyens, known as Adrian Florensz) was a professor of theology at the University of Leuven and became its rector in 1493. Appointed tutor to Archduke Charles of Austria, the future Emperor Charles V, in 1507 in Ghent and later in Spain, where he became the emperor’s chief adviser until he was appointed viceroy during Charles V’s absences. He was elected Pope to succeed Leo X and was heavily criticised for his political decisions, his simple and austere lifestyle, and his origins. The only Pope to have come from the Netherlands, he was the last non-Italian Pope before the election of John Paul II in 1978.
Rare, toned, scratches, scuffed on edge, red residue on the obverse, very fine.
