GEORGE DESMAREES (STOCKHOLM 1697 – MUNICH 1776) AND HIS STUDIO
George DESMAREES (Stockholm 1697 – Munich 1776) and his workshop
Portrait of Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria (1724 – 1799)
Original canvas. 18th-century carved and gilded wooden frame, decorated with a crown
Note: Prince-Elector Karl-Theodor von der Pfalz inherited Bavaria in 1777 and moved his residence from Mannheim to Munich. A patron of the arts, he undertook numerous reforms, particularly in the opera; he regularly received visits from Mozart. George Desmarées was summoned to the court of Munich in 1730 and was appointed court painter to the Elector. From 1743 onwards, he was invited to the courts of numerous German princes. Our model stands at the foot of a tall column plinth, in front of a console on which rest the electoral crown, the imperial crown and the helmet. Karl-Theodor is Grand Master of the Order of Saint Hubert, whose collar he wears.
Provenance: Belgian aristocratic family
H: 183 cm W: 124 cm
