The meeting of Jacob and Esau
17TH-CENTURY FLEMISH SCHOOL, STUDIO OF PIERRE PAUL RUBENS
The Meeting of Jacob and Esau
Canvas.
On the reverse of the stretcher, a chalk inscription reads "IL011 REH" and there are old inscriptions on labels on the reverse of the stretcher: "Meeting of Jacob and Esau. painting restored and re-stretched in 1914 by J. Buiso senior, expert restorer for the museums of Brussels and Belgium" and on another label "painting attributed by J. Buiso senior to Van Thulden, a pupil of Rubens, or to his school / by Paul Buiso, son of the former, to the school of Rubens ... / by Arthur Leret, expert at ... the school of Rubens or van Thulden, 1912. These three expert assessments were carried out separately".
A reproduction of the engraving by Pieter de Bailliu after Rubens, with variations, notably the addition of figures—possibly the artist’s self-portrait—on the right-hand side. Rubens’s painting (canvas, 331 x 282 cm) is held at the Staatsgalerie in Scheissheim (see R.-A. d’Hulot and M. Vandenven, Corpus Rubenianum. Rubens. The Old Testament, Leipzig, 1989, no. 16, reproduced fig. 42).
