Bears an inscription on paper on the reverse: “I, the undersigned, declare that this painting depicting Saint Francis on his deathbed belongs to the castle chapel at Wommersom and that it was removed by me in 1842 to be repaired, cleaned and restored, as all the paintings in the aforementioned chapel were suffering considerable damage from damp and lack of ventilation, intending thatit shall be returned there when circumstances permit, expressly stipulating that the Wills of my late dear and honoured parents, Sir Charles-Ernest-Henri-Pépin de T'Serclaes de Wommersom and Madame Marie-Magdelaine de Nachtegael, be (strictly) observed in this regard, in witness whereof I have signed this document and affixed the seal of my coat of arms. Done at Saint-Josse-ten-Noode near Brussels on 11 February 1843. J.F. Baron de T'Serclaes de Wommersom"

A version, without the angel musicians, of Saint Francis Consoled by Angel Musicians (Canvas, 117 x 93 cm) by
Cerano, held at the Palazzo Borromeo in Isola Bella (see M. Rosci, Il Cerano, Milan, 2000).
