The Rest of the Holy Family in Egypt with Angels Dancing and Playing Music
17TH-CENTURY FLEMISH SCHOOL, WORKSHOP OF ANTOINE VAN DYCK
The Rest of the Holy Family in Egypt with Angels Dancing and Playing Music
Canvas.
Provenance: Collection of the de T'Serclaes de Wommersom family since the 19th century.
Note: Our painting is comparable to Van Dyck’s work, likely the one painted for Queen Henrietta Maria, which has been lost but is known from an engraving by Schelte a Bolswert and from a version, with variations, held in Florence at the Palazzo Pitti (Canvas, 133.5 x 195.5 cm).
We also compare our painting to the large composition (Canvas, 215 x 285.5 cm, from the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg) in which Saint Joseph watches cherubs dancing; sunflowers are visible in the background and there are not cherubs singing in the sky but two partridges. See S. J. Barnes, N. De Poorter, O. Millar and H. Vey, Van Dyck. A complete catalogue of the paintings, New Haven and London, 2004, no. III.A.I and no. III.8).
