JEANNE TOUSSAINT'S CROWNED CRANE
19TH CENTURY CHINA, MODIFIED FOR JEANNE TOUSSAINT AROUND 1942
JEANNE TOUSSAINT'S CROWNED CRANE
Gilded bronze and cloisonné enamel crane, transformed into a "watch" for
Jeanne Toussaint, the dial signed Cartier
Case: depicted standing, neck turned backwards along its left flank,
feathers finely drawn and enamelled in white and black, bronze legs
resting on its four webbed claws
Dial: patinated and silvered from the Art Deco period in the shape of an egg, stick hour markers
and stylised hands, signed "Cartier"
Movement: mechanical with manual winding, anchor escapement,
spiral balance, unsigned French work
H. 31 cm. L. 25 cm
Originally, this crane, along with two others, formed the three
supports for a perfume burner, a transformation that was probably
carried out by the Cartier workshops under the direction of its designer
Jeanne Toussaint.
Provenance: Collection of Madame Jeanne Toussaint, then by succession
Experts: Alice Jossaume (Cabinet Portier) and Geoffroy Ader (AderWatches)
