ITALY, PONTIFICAL STATES
Adrian VI (1522-1523)
Papal bulla, in lead, 47.24g, 37mm, 3/4 face nimbed heads of St Paul and St Peter, in the middle, a cross surmounting a coat of arms, SS PP, rev. ADRI ANVS . PP. VI, cross above (Serafini 77).
Adrien VI (Adriaan Floriszoon Boeyens, also known as Adrien Florensz) was professor of theology at the University of Louvain and became its rector in 1493. He was appointed tutor to the Archduke Charles of Austria, the future Emperor Charles V, in 1507 in Ghent and then in Spain, where he became the Emperor's principal adviser, eventually becoming viceroy during Charles V's absences. He was appointed pope to succeed Leo X and was heavily criticised for his political decisions, his simple and austere lifestyle and his origins. The only pope from the Netherlands, he was the last non-Italian pope before the election of John Paul II in 1978.
Rare, toned, scraped on the edge, red residue on the grenetis on the right, very fine.
