IVAN PETROVITCH KHLEBNIKOV (1819 - 1881), MOSCOW

Ivan Petrovitch KHLEBNIKOV (1819 - 1881), Moscow
Exceptional octagonal silver tea caddy and its presentation plate

with polychrome cloisonné enamelled decoration. Decorated in very high relief with couples of figures in traditional Russian clothing in frames of traditional Russian architecture. Each corner is decorated with a rooster. Decorated with geometric and stylised floral motifs.
Hallmark on each piece and 91 zolotniki, Hallmark Grand Ducales coat of arms and French weevil hallmark under the base of the box.

Note: The 91 zolotniki was only used for high quality productions, which indicates that our box is a prestigious special order.
The Hallmark indicates passage through France before 1893.
The Hallmark of the Russian Grand Ducal House is infrequent, marking a short period between 1872 and 1879. In 1872, Khlebnikov became the official supplier to Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, in 1873 supplier of items for Grand Duchess Marie's wardrobe and finally supplier to the Court of H.I.H. Grand Duke Vladimir in 1877. In 1879, Khlebnikov became the official supplier to the Imperial Court and began to mark its products with the double-headed eagle.

We know of several Khlebnikov models featuring characters in traditional Russian costume. On our box, the series of eight characters in the round creates a lively scene of discussion between each couple and conjures up an image of an idealised traditional Russia with its codes, architecture and folk costumes.
