The Villanova University Mendel Medal was established and awarded to outstanding scientists whose work helped advance the cause of science and also have demonstrated that there is no intrinsic conflict between true science and true religion.
L'abbé Georges Lemaître (1894-1966) was a Belgian catholic canon, physician and astronomer. He proposed the hypothesis of the primeval atom, also known as "The Big Bang theory" to explain the origin of the universe.
