The chickens
Pencil on paper, signed at bottom right. Completed in 1917 as a preparatory study for a watercolour ('Rooster and Chickens', 1917, private collection). With a certificate from Harold t'Kint de Roodenbeke. This drawing is one of the rare known preparatory works by this artist. The remarkable quality of the subject is highlighted by a very successful arrangement of the elements on the page. During this period, Léon Spilliaert was particularly interested in Galliformes: he painted them in both watercolour and gouache, and drew many spontaneously.
Under glass in a giltwood frame. Not removed from its frame.
