Oil on canvas. Godfried Schalcken (1643-1706) was a Dutch genre and portrait painter. He was renowned for his mastery in reproducing the effect of candlelight in the manner of the Leiden school of fijnschilders, where he completed his training between 1662 and 1665 in the studio of Gérard Dou, from whom he learned the technique of chiaroscuro, obtained from candlelight.
In a moulded and giltwood frame. Recanvassed.
