Adriaan-Jozef HEYMANS (1839-1921)
Adriaan-Jozef HEYMANS (1839-1921)
Side of the road
Oil on Masonite, signed 'AJ Heymans' at bottom right. Labels from the 'Centennaire du Cercle' exhibition at the Cercle Royal Artistique et Littéraire [Royal Artistic and Literary Circle] in 1947 and the 'Exposition Centennale de l'Art Belge' [Centennial Exhibition of Belgian Art] at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1930 on the back. A painter of landscapes and seascapes, Heymans was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, but considered himself essentially self-taught. During a visit to Paris (1855-1858), he met Rousseau, Corot, Millet and Daubigny. His style evolved from the Grey School to a search for lighting. One of the major pioneers of luminism, he was one of Monet's first admirers in Belgium, and was a founding member of the Société libre des Beaux-Arts [Free Society of Beaux-Arts], Société des XX [XX Society], Société de Vie et Lumière [Society of Life and Light], and the Société de l'Art contemporain [Society of Contemporary Art].
In a moulded giltwood frame.
