Willem Paerels (1878-1972)
Willem Paerels (1878-1972)
Industrial port scene
Oil on canvas signed at bottom right. Linked to the painters A. Oleffe, P. Thévenet and F. Schirren. Willem Paerels exhibited with them at the Le Labeur Circle, replaced in 1907 by Vie et Lumière [Life and Light]. A first participation in the La Libre Esthétique fair in 1906 classified him as an independent painter. He soon became well-known to the public through the numerous exhibitions, both abroad and in Belgium, in which he took part. In 1914, his first individual exhibition at the Belgian Giroux gallery tied him to the Brabant Fauves of which the gallery was a staunch advocate. His canvasses are characterized by a tendency towards simplicity of form and accentuation of chromatic contrast.
In a silver wood frame.
74 x 71 cm
